History Taikyoku (太極) translates as ‘Grand Ultimate’ or ‘Supreme Ultimate’, borrowing the concept from Chinese philosophy and Taoist thought. The Taikyoku kata were likely created by Gichin Funakoshi in the 1930s as introductory forms for Shotokan, designed to teach fundamental techniques, stances, and movement patterns to beginners. His son Yoshitaka (Gigo) Funakoshi played a significant role in their development and is seen by many as the real creator of the forms used today. Three forms exist officially (Shodan, Nidan, Sandan), with additional forms later developed by separate associations. The kata were later adopted and modified by Masutatsu Ōyama for Kyokushin karate.
