| History | Gekisai Dai Ichi was created by Chōjun Miyagi in 1940 as part of his effort to make Gōjū-ryū more accessible for physical education in Okinawan schools. The name means ‘Attack and Destroy Number One’, with gekisai referring to the destruction or breaking down of obstacles. The kata was specifically designed to be a simpler, more approachable introduction to Goju-ryu principles than the classical kata. It is also practised in Kyokushin, where Masutatsu Ōyama incorporated it with some modifications. |
