| History | The Heian kata were originally called Pinan (平安) and created by Itosu Ankō around 1907 to introduce karate into the Okinawan school system. Many of the movements in Heian Yondan appear in Kankū Dai, as Itosu used that kata as one of the foundational sources when creating the Pinan series. When Gichin Funakoshi brought karate to mainland Japan, he renamed them Heian, retaining the same kanji but using the Japanese pronunciation. |
