History Fukyūgata was explicitly created for the purpose of spreading and popularising karate practice, developed by the Okinawan Karate Federation around 1940–1941. Fukyūgata Ichi was created by Nagamine Shōshin of Matsubayashi-ryū, while Fukyūgata Ni was developed by Chōjun Miyagi of Gōjū-ryū. Both forms were designed as standardised introductory kata suitable for physical education in Okinawan schools.
